Answer: Whether it is air conditioners or heating units it is important that they are energy efficient. This is because it helps in money saving in the long run. However, there are different energy ratings for cooling as well as heating units. For example, Seasonal Energy Efficiency or the SEER rating and the Energy Efficiency Ratio or the EER is used for measuring the energy efficiency of air conditioners. SEER ratings are considered a more comprehensive way of measuring the efficiency of air conditioners. SEER ratings measure the efficiency of air conditioners for a season and EER is a single rating point.Average Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE measures the efficiency of furnaces which operate on gas or oil. This rating is expressed in percentage and it shows how much fuel was used for heating and the rest of the fuel is wasted. In recent times there are furnaces which have a rating as high 96.7.Last but not the least; heating seasonal performance or HSPF measures the efficiency of heat pumps. On the other hand the cooling capacity of heat pumps is measured using SEER. Modern day heat pumps can have HSPF as high as 7.7 or sometimes even 10.To conclude it is recommended that consumers should carefully look at the energy efficiency ratings before buying a heating or a cooling unit to get best results.
